Cisco Nexus 5000 Series NX-OS Software Configuration Guide

Created by ciscomoderator on AM.All Ethernet switching ports maintain media access control MAC address tables. To switch frames between LAN ports efficiently, the switch maintains an address table. When the switch receives a frame, it associates the media access control MAC address of the sending network device with the LAN port on which it was received.

The switch dynamically builds the address table by using the MAC source address of the frames received. When the switch receives a frame for a MAC destination address not listed in its address table, it floods the frame to all LAN ports of the same VLAN except the port that received the frame.

When the destination station replies, the switch adds its relevant MAC source address and port ID to the address table. These static MAC entries are retained across a reboot of the switch. In addition, you can enter a multicast address as a statically configured MAC address. A multicast address can accept more than one interface as its destination. The switch uses an aging mechanism, defined by a configurable aging timer, so if an address remains inactive for a specified number of seconds, it is removed from the address table.

You can configure MAC addresses for the switch. These addresses are static MAC addresses. To configure a static MAC address, perform this task:. Specifies a static address to add to the MAC address table. If you enable the auto-learn option, the switch will update the entry if the same MAC address is seen on a different port.

Network Troubleshooting using PING, TRACERT, IPCONFIG, NSLOOKUP COMMANDS

This example shows how to put a static entry in the MAC address table:. To delete a static MAC address, perform this task:. To delete the static entry from the MAC address table, enter the no form of the command. You can use the mac-address-table static command to assign a static MAC address to a virtual interface. You can configure the amount of time that an entry the packet source MAC address and port that packet ingresses remain in the MAC table. To configure the aging time for all MAC addresses, perform this task:.

Specifies the time before an entry ages out and is discarded from the MAC address table. The range is from 0 to ; the default is seconds. Entering the value 0 disables the MAC aging. This example shows how to set the aging time for entries in the MAC address table to seconds 10 minutes :. You can clear all dynamic entries in the MAC address table.

To clear the MAC address table, perform this task:. Clears the dynamic address entries from the MAC address table. This example shows how to clear the dynamic entries in the MAC address table:. To display MAC address configuration information, perform one of these tasks:. This example shows how to display the MAC address table:. This example shows how to display the current aging time:.To configure the aging time for entries in the MAC address table, use the mac address-table aging-time command.

To return to the default settings, use the no form of this command. Aging time for MAC address table entries. The range is from 0 to seconds. The default is seconds. Entering 0 disables MAC address aging. The command syntax is changed to mac address-table aging-time.

The age value may be rounded off to the nearest multiple of 5 seconds. If the system rounds the value to a different value from that specified by the user from the rounding processthe system returns an informational message. When you use the no form of this command without the VLAN parameter, only those VLANs that have not been specifically configured for the aging time reset to the default value.

Those VLANs with specifically modified aging times are not modified. When you use the no form of this command and specify a VLAN, the aging time for the VLAN is returned to the current global configuration for the aging time, which may or may not be the default value of seconds depending if the global configuration of the switch for the aging time has been changed. The aging time is counted from the last time that the switch detected the MAC address.

This example shows how to change the length of time an entry remains in the MAC address table to seconds for the entire switch:.

Displays information about the MAC address aging time. To configure a log message notification of MAC address table events, use the mac address-table notification command. To disable log message notifications, use the no form of this command. Sends a notification message if the MAC address is moved. Sends a notification message if the MAC address table threshold is exceeded.

Optional Specifies the percentage limit 1 to beyond which threshold notifications are enabled. Optional Specifies the minimum time in seconds 10 to between two notifications.

The command syntax is changed to mac address-table notification. This example shows how to configure a log message notification when the threshold exceeds 45 percent, restricting the update interval to once every seconds:. Displays information about the MAC address table. To configure a static entry for the MAC address table, use the mac address-table static command.

To display the error disabled state of interfaces, use the show interface status err-disabled command. To display information about all the switch port interfaces, use the show interface switchport command. To display the information about the transceivers connected to a specific interface, use the show interface transceiver command. Displays information about an Ethernet interface slot number and port number.

Optional Displays detailed information about the transceivers on an interface. You can use the show interface transceiver command only for physical interfaces. This example shows how to display the transceivers connected to a specified Ethernet interface:.We understand the concept of mac learning and how a table is maintained on a switch, when it switch receives a frame, and associates the MAC address of the sender with the LAN port where it was received.

Under loop condition, it may so happen that the same MAC is learnt via two different ports on the switch.

Understanding of the concept of mac-learning on the switch and NX-OS configuration. Troubleshoot Layer 2 switching issues. By default, on Nexus9K, you may not see the logs, which specifically tells us that the switch is experiencing mac-moves. However, in case these movements are high, we will end up seeing the following logs. These messages are indicative of an event in the mac table.

When we have continuous mac moves in the environment, these messages could be seen. Basically, the switch received frames with the same source MAC on two or more interfaces at a very high rate. The switch has a mechanism to count the number of MAC "move-backs" and weigh them based on the number of times the MAC address moves. The dynamic MAC learning will be disabled by the switch, in order to protect the control-plane.

At this point, you may want to check the mac-move count to understand, if and how many mac-moves have been experienced on the device. The next obvious thing is to find out the mac address that is causing this problem and the vlans and the interface information where, this is being experienced.

To look for this information, we need to raise the logging level of L2FM from the default value of 2 up to 5 on N9K platform. In such a case, we can detect and limit the number of times that a MAC address moves from one port to another.

However, starting 7. Now, further loop detection after the above command has been enabled, will take down the interface with lower interface index.

Why not write small shell script with scan all switches using snmp all devices in the network, if you have more switches in the network.
